I have several posters in my dorm room, one of which is a black and white photograph of the Eiffel Tower entitled “Afternoon in Paris”. For the past two years I have looked at this poster every single day, but yet I have never spent a significant amount of time studying the image. Today, I actually took the time to really look at the poster and realized that there aren’t any humans or animals within the photograph. I find this to be interesting because the area around the Eiffel Tower is extremely high profile and tends to be overcrowded with tourists. Additionally, the park looks perfectly manicured. There aren’t any fallen leaves, trash cans or stray rocks. I feel as if the photograph is not an impromptu piece of art but rather a landscape which was specifically prepared for the photographer. Another aspect of the photograph which I have a new found appreciation for is the contrast between the bright white of the trees against the dark sky.
