Weekly Entry #5
Recently, while at a conference at Carnegie Hall, the author of the “Harry Potter” series, J.K. Rowling stated that the character Dumbledore is gay. I have been reading the “Harry Potter” series since the very beginning and was surprised by J.K. Rowling’s assertions. While reading the series, I never really took into consideration the status of Dumbledore’s sexuality. However; now looking back upon the content in all seven novels, I believe it is only the final book which really references Dumbledore’s sexuality. From the details provided I believe that it is quite a stretch to say that Dumbledore is gay. I wonder if J.K. Rowling had always intended the character of Dumbledore to be gay or was it just an afterthought? I am also curious as to why J.K. Rowling waited until now to discuss Dumbledore’s sexuality? I feel as if J.K. Rowling chose to release this statement in order to stir up controversy surrounding the novels and increase the publicity surrounding the series.
